Nigerian supper singer Mr Eazi returns with his electoral campaign themed video dubbed “Keys to The City (Ogede)” calling on the youths and those eligible to vote to step forward and make key decisions.
Mr Eazi’s career has grown exponentially since he first broke out with 2015’s “Skintight”. Making it to the UK top 40 charts twice, with M.O and Lotto Boyzz on “Bad Vibe” and RAYE on “Decline”, the singer is revered as an international star, from Lagos to Accra to London.
Ahead of his upcoming mixtape, Life is Eazi Vol 2., Mr Eazi is taking a break from his internationally renowned music career to focus on his presidential campaign, starting in the fictional state of Ogede (which is clearly London).
“Keys To The City (Ogede)” is a witty criticism of the state of Nigerian politics, where running for office successfully requires very little intelligence, motivation or goodwill — just money, power and an enticing offer: ogede (plantain).
While the song is catchy, it is rather repetitive, placing focus on the entertaining and topical video. The ‘Official Campaign Video’ sees President Eazi cruising around Ogede in his limousine, saving babies and engaging with the youth, as reported by the fictional news station, Lamba News.
Directed by Meji Alabi, this video is very well-thought-out — from the news sub-captions, “Corrupt officials in ruling parties to be persecuted in 2099” for example, to the skit of Mr Eazi coming directly for our head of state, saying:
“The youth of Ogede, they’re not serious, they’re not focussed, they want free things!”
After the dramatic and dubious elections of Osun State and the Lagos State APC primaries, Mr Eazi’s “Ogede” campaign seems like a pretty accurate and maddening representation of the ridiculousness that is to come.
