Nigeria’s Wande Coal has kept himself really busy this year. Whether he’s dropping videos for past releases (“Oh No No”), shining on other people’s tracks (M.I’s “Kososhi”), or dropping gems of his own (“Will You Be Mine”), the singer isn’t letting his post-“Iskaba” renaissance go to waste.

Now, he’s teamed up with one of the most exciting and consistent producers in the game, Juls, for his interesting new love song: “So Mi So”.
As expected, Juls’ production is the best thing about “So Mi So”. While the British-Ghanaian producer shines by skillfully melding highlife and afrobeat — giving Wande Coal his most accomplished beat since “Iskaba” — the singer ends up feeling a little out of his element.
On the mid-tempo track, Wande Coal sings about a beautiful woman he can’t seem to get out of his mind, but given his lacklustre delivery, we don’t really but it. His energy on the song is even more confusing when you consider Juls’ vibrant production and the song’s themes.

Anyway, while the song isn’t the banger we were expecting, we’re glad that Wande Coal is at least trying to diversify his sound. It’s refreshing to see a Nigerian artist who isn’t simply content with trying to create endless variations of their last hit song.
